The book "Neue Techniken in Acryl. Patina- und Rosteffekte" by Brigitte van Loh-Wenzel (Urania, Freiburg 2006) made me discover that you can let acrylic paintings artificially "grow old". Surely i had to test that ;-)
There are different metal coatings. After two layers of coating, you cover the metal with liquid instant patina or instant rust. You have to wait a while to see the full change. Depending on the combination it takes from some hours to two days.

A rough structure with extra pastous red acrylics, dry brushed with gold coating and partly covere with green patina liquid led to the following effects:
